        Vertical Gallery presents ˈsten(t)-səl

        Stencil Art Group Show

Chicago, IL – June 25, 2013 – Stencil art has been an avenue for political and artistic expression geared to the masses. With stencil history going back to cave drawings and early book publishing, it was the spring of 1977 when John Fekner createdword-signsusing hand cut cardboard stencils and spray paint. He began a relentless crusade concerned with social and environmental issues. In 1982 in France, Jef Aerosol began stenciling portraits—whether cultural icons or anonymous people, he mastered the technique of stencil to portray intimacy, catching the truth of an instant. Both are pioneers of an art movement that now challenges the line between traditional art techniques, graffiti, photo-realism and printmaking.

Vertical Gallery is pleased to present ˈsten(t)-səl : Stencil Art Group Show July 6 - 27, 2013. This exhibition represents 12 artists using stencils in their own very distinct ways; the result pushes the boundaries between traditional, street and contemporary painting. Featuring John Fekner (New York, NY), Jef Aérosol (Lille, FR), XOOOOX (Berlin, DE) , Zeus (London, GB), David Soukup (Chicago, IL), FAKE (Amsterdam, NL), Jeremy Novy (San Francisco, CA), Left Handed Wave (Chicago, IL), Rene Gagnon (Fall River, MA), F63 (Vancouver, BC), Epyon5 (Chicago, IL), That Stencil Guy (Lexington, KY) and AIKO (New York, NY).

Join us for the opening reception on Saturday, July 6, 2013, from 6:00 – 10:00pm. ˈsten(t)-səl will be open to the public through July 27.
